Green Plaid Civil War Dress

This dress has been through so much! At least it feels that way. I made it more than a year ago with some turquoise and tan plaid homespun that I found at JoAnn's. I wore it to Harper's Ferry and this unfortunate incident happened.  ;)  So I had to cut out the torn part of the skirt, re-gauge the entire thing, and resew it to the waistband.Whew. Luckily I had made the skirt a little wider than usual so by cutting out the ripped panel, the skirt width was not seriously compromised.

It has a very simple gathered bodice, slight V neckline, and coat sleeves with a strip of plaid bias across the wrists as trim.

Coat sleeves are great--I made mine a little short so they can be worn with undersleeves, or I can roll them up out of the way for work.

Piping strengthens the waistband, sleeve and neckline seams. Bodice closes with hook & eye tape.  Very basic and simple, this makes for a nice work dress.

  1. What pattern did you use for this dress? Or was it drafted?

  2. I drafted the pattern. :) I used "Practical Prinkery" by Elizabeth Stewart Clark to draft a bodice base, and added gathers to it for this dress. She also tells you how to make coat sleeves.
